Austrian Bass-baritone Rupert Bergmann was born in Graz, Austria. He studied at the Academy of Music in Graz,
attended master classes in Germany, and worked with teachers like Roberta Knie and Walter Berry.
In 1990 he made his professional debut at the Opera House in Graz.
While living in Vienna, Rupert
has appeared with many Viennese opera companies including the Wiener Volksoper, Theater an der Wien,
Wiener Kammeroper, Neue Oper Wien and Bühne Baden. He has performed at many festivals and toured throughout
Europe, Canada, Puerto Rico, Chile, Japan and the US. Rupert has performed over 70 roles, ranging from
„Kurwenal“ in Wagner's Tristan and „Peter Besenbinder“ in Humperdink's Hänsel und Gretel to contemporary
operas like the title role in „Wozzeck“ by Alban Berg, and others.
Being specialized in contemporary music
Rupert participated in many world premieres like „Vogel Herzog Idiot“ - three short operas just written for
Rupert in 2011, of which one was „Heute Abend Boris Godunow“ by Karmella Tsepkolenko. In 2018 he was
invited by Ukho Ensemble Kiev to sing the role of Il Malaspina in a production of „Luci mie traditrici“ by
Salvatore Scviarrino at Kiev National Opera House.
He has also performed a lot of operetta roles like „Ollendorf“
in Millöcker's „Bettelstudent“ and „Frank“ in Fledermaus, which he performed at the Teatro Municipal, Santiago de
Chile and twice at the New National Theater Tokyo. In 2008 he achieved audience and critic’s praise for his role
of „Zsupán“ in Gypsy Baron at the Leharfestival Bad Ischl, Austria. In 2014 he was „Tevye“ in „The Fiddler On The Roof“
at Austria's largest operetta festival, Seefestspiele Mörbisch and in 2015 at the Teatro Communale Bolzano/Italy, he considers
Tevye as his most important stage role.
Since 1997 he often has been a guest of the Festival 2days2nights of New Music in Odessa and since then has developed
tight relationships with many Ukranian musicans. He performed at Kiev Music Fest 2014, L'viv Kontrasts Festival
2013 and 2017 and Donetsk first and only DonBas Art Festival 2013. As a result a number of Ukranian composers have
written for him, he performed these works in Ukraine, Austria and Northamerica.
Beyond the operatic stage, Rupert is very dedicated in performing religious and church music and he also presents Lied
recitals which brought him to Montréal, Ottawa, Boston, New York, Washington DC, Moscow and St.Petersburg.
